So I have been newly inspired…and all too often reminded that I am a failure as a blog-writer, in that I don’t keep up with it. So I’m trying to do better as a person!

*Jeff – if you read this, I have not forgotten that I am doing a piece on you. I promise*

A few nights ago, I had my first poetic performance. I was nervous as all hell, shakin and what not but it was amazing. The acts I had to follow were truly inspirational and so very talented. And it made me happy to know that real thinkers and creative spirits do exist in Athens. With any luck, I’ll be back on my writing grind in the near future…so be on the lookout for ya girl!

Now, it also brought to mind that current state of hip-hop. I know that this may be a tried topic but it’s on my mind. If you know me, you know I can appreciate a fye beat and sub-par lyrics with the best of them. But why is this particular brand being looked on as inspirational, world changing material? By all means, appreciate the music, but appreciate for what it really is. Every rapper is NOT an MC. This has also been on my mind since Soulja Boy came to UGA and people lost they damn minds. Here is my thing, Soulja Boy is a child tryna make a lil change for him and his momma. Nothing more, nothing less. He makes club bangers and everybody, white and black alike, can dig him. Take him for just that…a kid tryna make a dollar. I understand that a lot of people were upset that he was the performer chosen during Soul Week but looking at it from a business standpoint, Union chose someone that appealed to everybody. And realistically, you were never gonna see that money again anyway. It wasn’t like if he didn’t come they were gonna redistribute that $28,000 back to us. If he really bothered you, you shouldn’t have been in the front row doing the Bird Walk. Ok, I’m off my lil soap box on that one, just wanted to speak on it briefly. I could go on and on and on but I’m gonna go ahead and end here.

I’ll be returning soon…hopefully. Kthanxbi

Hmm…how to follow that nice spot on V-Day...?

Let’s hit another psuedo-sensitive subject…my guy Barack Obama! I want to preface this ENTIRE thing with: I LOVE BARACK OBAMA, EVERYTHING HE STANDS FOR AND HOW HE GOT WHERE HE IS AND I CAN FULLY APPRECIATE THE MAGNITUDE OF A BLACK PRESIDENT. That being said…

Get off this man’s dick people (Hills excluded, she is comfortable there). I understand that people love the hell out of him, myself included. He is one the most powerful speakers and truly inspirational people I have ever seen. He basically lit a fire under the ass of America and told us it was OK to fight what was going on, because it was wrong. And he made us believe that if we wanted change, WE had to go for it – and we did. Here we are in 2009 with an amazing, awe-inspiring, helluva man as president, who happens to be black. With all hope, our country is on the precipice of TRUE REFORM and he is the man to take us there.

Whoa, OK let me hop of his dick myself and get back to the point…he is not defined by his race. He doesn’t perpetuate the stereotype that an illegal hustle in the streets is the ONLY way to live – he took his ass to school and worked for what he wanted, learned what he needed and used it all to his advantage.  He doesn’t wear FuBu, RocaWear, Vokal or any other rapper’s clothing and I’m willing to bet on top of that he has never donned a rhinestone-studded airbrushed t-shirt. So why oh why are people creating the most coontastic tributes to this man? I can appreciate t-shirts, hats and bumper stickers as much as the next, but why are there tennis shoes, glow-in-the-dark posters, shot glasses and roach clips for this man?! Let’s not forget the Head-Of-State dildo! People, get the hell outta here with this shit! I can comprehend the magnitude of our first black president and fully believe Black people all over the country should revel in this moment, whether you voted for him not – enjoy the history. Don’t hate him because he is half-white, don’t hate him because he is half-black; love him for the great man is and still aspires to be. Don’t dumb down this historic time to trinkets.

**I will say that this was really hard to write. It was tough to stress exactly HOW I want people to get off him without sounding as if I, myself, don’t love him.

So...about Valentine's Day...

Ok people; let’s start this off right…fuck this holiday. No offense to those who are in love and shit and are all about doing something sweet for their significant other but come on! Why do you need a specific day to show your love? What’s wrong with the other 364 days of the year? I just find it ridiculous that if you don’t do something, on this specific day, you somehow love your boyfriend or girlfriend less, well more than likely girlfriend. This day is so much more important to the females guys could probably care less.

For instance, if you made dinner for your girlfriend on V-Day it’s a sweet gesture, but it was already expected of you. Now if you failed to do anything extra special, you apparently fail as a boyfriend and don’t love ol girl…what the hell?! I fully endorse people doing extra special things in relationships, keeping it fresh and all, but things like that are supposed to be done on anniversaries – that’s what they are there for. It’s like Valentine’s Day is the universal, mandatory anniversary!

Seriously…Valentine’s Day is just a day made by Hallmark to sell cards, flowers and candy. And about that candy…shit I don’t even like chocolate like that…and flowers die!

Don’t get me wrong, I realize that people who are in relationships and what not dig on the day and its all about y’all love but I just think it is HIGHLY overrated and commercialized.

But who could blame you? Since you were in kindergarten people have set aside this day just for making crafts and forcing you to have them for everyone. Ya know – don’t wanna hurt lil kids feelings. God forbid the loser of the class finds out he or she is a loser that way (sorry kids). For real tho, why did the world stop turning that day, no need to learn anything or get things done…just use the whole day to play with glue and glitter??

Now don’t read this as a bitter bitch’s rant against love…it’s not that deep. I also don’t buy into that whole ‘Singles Awareness Day’ stuff either, I just feel that things like this – a retarded, commercialized and superficial holiday – make real relationships harder. It’s not easy to love someone, it’s sometimes harder to make sure you show it and the idea that this day makes or breaks your ‘do you love me’ status sucks.

All this said…go forth and be ghey on that day o’ love!
